What happened
On 29 August 2015, a Europa, registration G-OWWW, was performing a private takeoff from a runway near Lydeway Field, Wiltshire. During the takeoff roll, when the aircraft had reached a speed of roughly 40 kt, it suddenly veered toward the left. This movement caused the aircraft to depart the runway and enter a field containing standing corn, which was approximately 2 ft high.
In an attempt to regain control, the pilot closed the throttle and applied the brakes. However, the aircraft continued its path and struck a hedge located approximately 15 m from the runway edge. There were no injuries to the pilot or the single passenger on board, though the aircraft sustained damage to its windscreen, propeller, and both wings.
The investigation
The investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. Investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the loss of directional control during the takeoff roll. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was departing in a westerly direction, while the wind was recorded as being from the south at 5 kt.
Findings
- The pilot was unable to determine the exact reason for the leftward swing.
- Potential contributing factors considered included a sudden gust of wind or the possibility of a brake sticking during the roll.
