What happened
On 25 June 2016, an EV-97 Teameurostar UK, registration G-SHMI, was performing a private flight at Croft Farm Airfield in Defford, Worcestershire. During the final approach to Runway 28, a ground radio operator observed the aircraft flying at an altitude lower than typical for similar aircraft on final approach.
Approximately 60 feet before reaching the runway threshold, the aircraft struck a field of crops. The impact caused the aircraft to strike the ground and slide for an additional 50 feet before coming to a complete stop. There were no injuries to the pilot or the single passenger on board, though both occupants were able to exit the aircraft easily.
The investigation
The AAIB investigation was based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot and further inquiries. The investigation examined the flight path and the physical damage sustained by the aircraft, which included damage to the propeller, canopy, landing gear, and the right wing. The pilot provided information regarding the flight conditions and the circumstances leading to the contact with the ground.
Findings
- The aircraft struck a crop field short of the runway threshold.
- The pilot misjudged the aircraft's height during the final approach phase.
