What happened
On 6 June 2014, a Pegasus Quik, registration G-CCPC, was performing a circuit pattern at East Fortune Airfield in East Lothian. The flight was a private operation conducted by a single pilot. During the approach to Runway 11, the wind conditions had shifted from 110º at 11-12 knots to a direction of 90º.
The aircraft initially touched down on a grass area situated just before the beginning of the concrete runway. As the aircraft transitioned onto the concrete surface, it bounced back into the air. In an attempt to recover, the pilot applied full power to initiate a go-around maneuver. However, the wind caught the left wing, causing the aircraft to veer toward the right side of the runway.
During the excursion, the rear wheels of the trike struck a fence surrounding an adjacent cattle field. The impact forced the aircraft into the field, where it came to a stop. The incident resulted in damage to the triable structure, the wing, and the propeller. The pilot sustained minor injuries.
The investigation
Investigators reviewed the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot. The examination focused on the sequence of the landing, the impact with the airfield infrastructure, and the aerodynamic effects of the wind during the go-around attempt.
