Aircraft landing accident due to overweight condition

No fatalities • Nizhnevartovsk, Russia • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft struck the ground short of the runway threshold during its final approach, resulting in significant damage but no injuries.

What happened

During the final approach phase of the flight, the aircraft experienced a loss of altitude, leading to an impact with the ground before reaching the runway threshold. The force of the impact caused the undercarriage to be ripped from the airframe. Following the initial contact, the aircraft bounced across the terrain, eventually coming to a stop a short distance from the initial impact site.

Despite the severity of the impact, all 15 occupants on board managed to evacuate the wreckage without sustaining any injuries. The structural damage sustained during the event was so extensive that the aircraft was declared a total loss.

Findings

Investigations into the accident revealed that the aircraft was operating significantly over its structural limits. At the time of the landing attempt, the total weight of the aircraft exceeded the maximum allowable landing weight by nine tons.

Probable cause

The aircraft was operating at a weight significantly exceeding its maximum landing weight limits during the final approach.
