Cargo aircraft engine failure and crash near Baku-Bina Airport

No fatalities • Baku-Heydar Aliyev (Bina), Azerbaijan • Landing (descent or approach)

A four-engine cargo flight diverted to Baku-Bina Airport experienced a total loss of power during a go-around, resulting in a crash in a rocky field.

What happened

A cargo flight transporting 13 tons of freight, along with 8 passengers and 7 crew members, departed from Yerevan Airport destined for Turkmenbashi. While the aircraft was cruising at an altitude of 9,100 meters, the flight crew requested an emergency diversion to Baku-Bina Airport.

During the approach phase, air traffic control instructed the crew to perform a go-around because the aircraft was aligned with an inactive runway that was currently undergoing construction, parallel to the active runway 35. As the crew began the climb following the instruction, all four engines of the four-engine aircraft ceased operation at the same time. This sudden loss of thrust caused the aircraft to stall, leading to a crash in a rocky area situated approximately 6 km from the airport. The impact resulted in the destruction of the aircraft, though all 15 occupants survived with injuries.

Findings

The investigation into the incident highlights that the simultaneous failure of all four engines occurred immediately following the initiation of the go-around maneuver.

Probable cause

The simultaneous failure of all four engines caused the aircraft to stall and crash during a go-around procedure.
