What happened
During an approach conducted in stormy weather, a four-engine aircraft experienced a bounce upon touching down at Goma Airport. Following the bounce, the aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently within the available 2,050-meter runway length. The aircraft subsequently overran the end of the runway, veered to the left, and eventually came to a stop in an area of solidified lava.
While the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, there were no injuries reported among the four crew members on board. All personnel successfully evacuated the wreckage without harm.
Findings
Preliminary reports indicate that the landing was executed with a tailwind component. The combination of the tailwind component and the bouncing effect during touchdown contributed to the loss of directional control and the inability to stop before the runway perimeter.
