Runway overrun at Arequipa-Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón Airport

No fatalities • Arequipa-Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón, Peru • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a runway excursion at Arequipa-Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón Airport, resulting in the airframe breaking into two pieces.

What happened

During the landing phase at Arequipa-Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón Airport, the aircraft failed to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the runway. After touching down too far down the runway, the plane was unable to halt within the available pavement. The aircraft subsequently overran the runway, traveling approximately 160 metres along the ground. During this excursion, the landing gear was lost, and the structural integrity of the fuselage was compromised, causing the aircraft to break into two separate sections.

All 45 occupants on board were successfully rescued from the wreckage. Among those rescued, 11 passengers sustained injuries during the incident. The aircraft was determined to be a total loss.

Findings

  • The primary factor in the accident was the excessive touchdown point along the runway, which left insufficient distance for the aircraft to come to a complete stop.

Probable cause

The aircraft overran the runway because it landed too far down the runway, leaving inadequate distance for braking.
