A South Sudan Air Force aircraft experienced a landing gear failure upon touchdown at Yida Airfield, resulting in a post-crash fire.

What happened

On the morning of the incident, an aircraft operated by the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) departed from Juba Airport at 06:18 local time, bound for Yida. The flight was carrying a total of seven people, consisting of a crew of four and three passengers.

As the aircraft approached Yida Airfield, the flight crew encountered reduced visibility caused by fog and haze. During the landing sequence on the unpaved dirt runway, the left main landing gear appeared to collapse. This mechanical failure caused the aircraft to lose control of its trajectory. Following the loss of control, the plane came to a stop and subsequently caught fire. The intense flames resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft type.

Findings

All seven individuals on board were successfully rescued from the wreckage. While everyone survived the accident, three people sustained minor injuries during the event.

Probable cause

The collapse of the left main landing gear during landing on a dirt runway led to the loss of control and subsequent fire.
