What happened
Shortly after departing from Luanda-4 de Fevereiro Airport, the aircraft encountered critical issues during its flight over the Angolan province of Malanje. The pilot initially communicated that an engine fire had occurred and expressed intentions to perform an emergency landing at Malanje. Approximately three minutes following that transmission, the pilot sent a final message stating that the crew would attempt an immediate landing directly ahead. This communication served as the final contact with the aircraft.
It is believed the aircraft may have been struck by fire from UNITA rebels during the flight. The wreckage was not located until 2003, when it was discovered in a remote area. At the time of the crash, the aircraft's configuration included the landing gear in the retracted position, flaps set at 25°, and the right propeller in a feathered state.
Findings
- The crash resulted in 24 fatalities, including all four crew members and 20 passengers.
- The loss of the aircraft is attributed to potential ground fire from rebel forces.
