Runway excursion at Sambailo Airport

No fatalities • Sambailo, Guinea • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft failed to stop during its takeoff roll at Sambailo Airport, resulting in a runway overrun with no injuries reported.

What happened

While performing a takeoff roll at Sambailo Airport, the aircraft reached a speed of 180 km/h before the pilot-in-command determined that a successful takeoff was not possible. In response to this realization, the pilot attempted an emergency braking maneuver to halt the plane.

Despite these efforts, the aircraft could not come to a complete stop within the remaining 350 metres of the runway. The aircraft subsequently overran the runway surface and eventually came to a halt. There were no injuries among the 24 occupants on board during the incident.

Findings

  • The aircraft was unable to decelerate sufficiently within the available runway length.
  • The inability to stop before the end of the runway led to the excursion.

Probable cause

The aircraft failed to decelerate within the remaining runway distance during an aborted takeoff.
