What happened
While performing a cargo transport mission from Beira, an aircraft carrying a shipment of food supplies experienced a runway excursion. Upon making contact with the ground, the pilot identified that the aircraft had touched down on an incorrect runway, which measured only 2,600 feet in length. Despite this realization, the crew did not attempt a go-around to select a suitable runway.
Because the remaining runway length was insufficient to bring the plane to a halt, the aircraft continued past the end of the pavement. The vessel overran the threshold and came to a stop several dozen meters beyond the runway edge. The incident resulted in five individuals sustaining minor injuries. The aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
- The primary factor in the accident was the failure to initiate a go-around after the pilot recognized the landing was occurring on an inadequate runway.
