What happened
On 2 October 2022, a Robinson R22 Beta helicopter was involved in a fatal collision with terrain. The accident occurred approximately 42 nautical miles from Cunderdin Aerodrome. The impact resulted in the destruction of the aircraft and caused two fatalities, involving both the pilot and a passenger.
The investigation
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) requested technical assistance from the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) to support the investigation into the accident. Acting as an Accredited Representative under ICAO Annex 13, TAIC provided expertise to the overseas counterpart. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash was concluded in March 2026, following confirmation that further assistance from the New Zealand commission was no longer necessary.
