Aircraft crash near Khartoum-Haj Yusuf Airport following engine failure

17 fatalities • Khartoum, Sudan • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft crashed approximately 4 km southeast of Khartoum-Haj Yusuf Airport during its initial climb after experiencing a right engine failure.

What happened

During the initial climb phase following departure from Khartoum-Haj Yusuf Airport, the aircraft experienced a failure of its right engine. In response to the malfunction, the flight crew declared an emergency and received clearance to perform an emergency landing back at the airport.

While the aircraft was executing a turn during this return maneuver, it lost altitude and impacted the ground in a district situated roughly 4 km southeast of the airfield. The impact resulted in the destruction of the aircraft as well as several nearby structures. The accident resulted in nine fatalities on the ground and nine fatalities among the occupants, totaling 18 deaths. Additionally, the flight engineer sustained serious injuries, and eight individuals on the ground were injured during the event.

Findings

Investigations into the accident revealed that a high pressure fuel pump quillshaft fractured as a result of the pump seizing. Furthermore, the single functioning engine failed to generate sufficient power because the fuel datum trimmer had not been reset according to the procedures outlined in the flight manual.

Probable cause

The failure was caused by a broken fuel pump quillshaft and insufficient power from the remaining engine due to an improper fuel datum trimmer setting.
