What happened
On 11 July 1998, a Beech Super King Air 200, registration G-OLDZ, was involved in an incident while taxiing at Manchester Airport. The aircraft was operating a public transport flight with two crew members and five passengers on board. During the taxi phase, an acrid smell of electricity was detected within the cockpit, which was shortly followed by the appearance of smoke.
In response to the developing situation, the pilot moved the aircraft away from other personnel and aircraft on the airfield. Air Traffic Control was notified, and fire services were placed on standby. As a precaution, the engines were shut down and the electrical systems were isolated. All passengers and crew members successfully evacuated the aircraft without injury. Following the evacuation, the smoke dissipated and did not reappear.
The investigation
Following the event, the pilot submitted an aircraft accident report form. The investigation focused on identifying the source of the electrical smell and subsequent smoke. Investigators examined the aircraft's systems and traced the origin of the issue to the nose section of the airframe.
