What happened
During an attempt to depart from a grass airstrip measuring 3,500 feet in length, the aircraft experienced significant instability. While the aircraft was traveling at an airspeed of roughly 95 knots, the pilot reported that the plane suddenly yawed and rolled to the left immediately after briefly leaving the ground. The aircraft then descended back onto the runway surface before climbing again at an angle approximately 20 degrees left of the original runway heading.
As the flight continued on this deviated path, the landing gear made contact with the tops of trees, resulting in the aircraft impacting the ground. At the time of the incident, a 14-knot quartering tailwind was present. A passenger on board noted that the flaps were in the retracted position during the takeoff sequence. Nearby weather observations recorded winds from 010 degrees at 14 knots shortly after the event.
Findings
An inspection of the engines showed rotational scoring present throughout both the first and second stage turbines. However, investigators found no mechanical anomalies within the engine systems during the examination.
