Twin-engine aircraft crash near Silvânia

2 fatalities • Silvânia, Brazil • Flight

A twin-engine aircraft crashed in an open field near Silvânia following a dual engine failure during its descent to Goiânia.

What happened

On a flight originating from Montes Claros Airport destined for Goiânia, a twin-engine aircraft experienced a catastrophic loss of power. During the descent toward Goiânia Airport, the pilot notified air traffic control that the left engine had failed. In response to this emergency, the pilot requested authorization to perform a direct approach to runway 32, even though runway 14 was the active runway at the time.

Shortly after this initial failure, the right engine also ceased functioning. Following the loss of both engines, the pilot attempted to manage the descent and execute an emergency landing. However, the aircraft struck an open field located approximately 50 km east of Goiânia Airport. The impact was severe enough that the seat belt attachment points failed, resulting in the occupants striking the instrument panel. The crash resulted in two fatalities.

Findings

Investigation into the crash indicates that the simultaneous failure of both engines was the primary factor leading to the loss of control and subsequent impact. The structural failure of the seat belt mounting points during the collision contributed to the fatal injuries sustained by the occupants.

Probable cause

The total loss of propulsion due to the failure of both engines during the descent phase.
