Runway excursion during takeoff in heavy rain

No fatalities • Woleai, Federated States of Micronesia • Takeoff (climb)

An aircraft veered off the runway and into vegetation during a short field takeoff following contact with deep water on the runway surface.

What happened

During a short field takeoff operation, the pilot encountered significant standing water on the runway caused by heavy rainfall. As the aircraft accelerated, the right landing gear wheel entered a deep puddle, causing the plane to veer toward the right side of the runway. In an effort to recover directional control, the pilot attempted to lift the aircraft into ground effect; however, the aircraft lacked sufficient airspeed to complete the maneuver successfully.

As a result of the loss of control, the plane exited the runway boundaries and entered an area of tall grass and dense vegetation. The incident resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage and the wing spar, rendering the aircraft a total loss. There were no injuries reported among the 10 occupants on board, all of whom were able to exit the aircraft safely.

Findings

According to the pilot's report, there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures present prior to the accident that would have prevented the aircraft from operating normally. The primary factor in the excursion was the presence of deep water on the runway surface which caused the aircraft to deviate from its path.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway after the right landing gear encountered deep standing water during takeoff.
