What happened
On a charter flight departing from Lima-Jorge Chávez Airport at 06:25 local time, a twin engine aircraft was transporting seven workers from the Peruvian mining firm MARSA, along with two pilots, toward the Pias gold mine. As the flight approached Pias Airport, the crew encountered significant visibility restrictions caused by heavy fog.
While performing an approach on a heading of 320°, the aircraft descended below the safe altitude. During this descent, the plane struck power cables, which led to an aerodynamic stall. The aircraft subsequently crashed into a mountain slope situated approximately 4.5 km from the airport. The impact and a subsequent fire destroyed the aircraft, and all 9 fatalities were recorded among the crew and passengers.
Findings
- The flight was operating in conditions of limited visibility due to fog.
- The aircraft descended too low during the approach, resulting in a collision with power lines.
