What happened
During the approach phase of flight, the aircraft experienced a sudden and significant loss of altitude. Upon observing a high rate of descent accompanied by low airspeed, the co-pilot instructed the pilot to increase engine power. Despite this attempt to recover, the aircraft continued its downward trajectory.
The aircraft ultimately struck the ground approximately 30 yards before reaching the runway approach threshold. At the moment of impact, the aircraft was in a nose-low attitude with the right wing leading. The collision resulted in substantial damage to the right wing.
Findings
According to reports from the pilot, there were no mechanical malfunctions or equipment failures present prior to the accident that would have prevented the aircraft from operating normally. The primary issue involved a rapidly increasing descent rate and insufficient airspeed during the landing sequence.
