What happened
On a medical transport mission, a twin engine aircraft departed from New Delhi-Indira Gandhi Airport destined for Kulu-Bhuntar. The flight was carrying a crew of two pilots and three doctors. During the descent toward Kulu-Bhuntar Airport, the aircraft encountered instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
While navigating through these low-visibility conditions, the aircraft impacted a mountain slope approximately 20 km from its intended destination. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were five fatalities recorded, as all occupants on board perished in the crash.
Findings
Investigations into the accident indicate that the crew did not maintain a sufficient altitude during the approach. The primary factor in the collision was the failure to recognize the low altitude of the aircraft while operating in IMC.
