What happened
On May 6, 2021, a Beechcraft Super King Air B200GT, registration VT-MPQ, was performing a scheduled flight from Indore Airport to Gwalior under the operation of the Directorate of Aviation, Government of Madhya Pradesh. The flight was manned by a pilot holding an ATPL and a co-pilot holding a CPL, with one passenger also on board.
After departing from runway 25 at Indore, the aircraft climbed to flight level 270. During the descent into Gwalior, the crew coordinated with Delhi and Gwalior air traffic control. Upon approaching the destination, ATC informed the crew that runway 24L was currently in use and offered a VOR approach for the opposite runway, 06R. The crew opted for a visual approach to runway 06R during nighttime operations. The aircraft was cleared to descend to 2,700 feet, and the crew reported seeing the field at a distance of 25 nautical miles.
While executing a right base turn for runway 06R, the crew requested and received clearance to land. However, as the aircraft was short of the runway threshold, the main landing gear struck a raised arrester barrier. The impact brought the aircraft to a stop on runway 06R just past the threshold markings at 15:15 UTC. While the aircraft sustained substantial damage, no fire occurred following the impact. The three persons on board—comprising the two crew members and one passenger—sustained minor to serious injuries.
Findings
- The aircraft's main landing gear made contact with an elevated arrester barrier during the final stages of the landing approach.
