What happened
During a scheduled nighttime cargo operation traveling from Cincinnati to Nashville, an aircraft encountered deteriorating weather conditions as it neared its destination. While performing the approach into Nashville Airport, the pilot lost control of the aircraft, resulting in a high-speed descent into the terrain. The impact occurred in Brentwood, situated approximately 7 miles southwest of the airport.
The crash resulted in the total destruction of the plane and one fatality, as the pilot was the only person on board at the time of the accident.
Findings
Investigations concluded that the primary cause of the accident was an uncontrolled descent into the ground during the approach phase, triggered by the pilot experiencing spatial disorientation. Several environmental factors contributed to this loss of situational awareness, including:
- Reduced visibility due to fog and rain
- A low cloud ceiling
- Weather conditions that were more severe than what had been previously forecasted
