What happened
During a departure from Ann Arbor, an aircraft encountered hazardous weather conditions characterized by falling snow and low cloud ceilings. While attempting to climb, the pilot lost control of the aircraft type as it entered a stall. The plane subsequently crashed into a field. Although the impact caused the aircraft to be damaged beyond repair, all five occupants were successfully evacuated without reported fatalities.
Findings
Investigations revealed that the aircraft had not undergone deicing procedures before its flight. Significant accumulations of snow, measuring between 1/8 and 1/4 inch, were found covering the tail and wing surfaces. The accident was driven by inadequate preflight preparation regarding the management of airframe ice. Additional contributing environmental factors included the presence of low ceilings and active snowfall during the takeoff phase.
