What happened
On May 11, 2008, a Cessna F 152 was performing a local flight from Aalen-Elchingen to Jesenwang. After receiving takeoff clearance for runway 09 at approximately 15:44 local time, the aircraft began its takeoff roll. Approximately 250 meters into the roll, the aircraft suddenly veered to the left.
The aircraft traveled across the grass strip adjacent to the runway, heading toward the airfield buildings. Without a significant loss of speed, the aircraft continued its path until it struck an earthen embankment. Upon impact, the aircraft came to a halt, and a fire ignited in the engine compartment. The two occupants were able to exit the aircraft without injuries, and the fire was extinguished by bystanders.
The investigation
The BFU examined the aircraft and the site of the accident. The investigation included a technical inspection of the Cessna F 152, which showed no evidence of mechanical failure or impaired control surfaces. Meteorological conditions at the time were favorable for VFR flight, with 3/8 cloud cover above 2,000 ft and an easterly wind of 10-12 knots. The investigation also reviewed the pilot's experience, noting the pilot had held a private pilot license since December 2007 with approximately 20 total flight hours.
