Runway excursion involving mail flight at Kuching Airport

No fatalities • Kuching, Malaysia • Landing (descent or approach)

A cargo aircraft veered off the runway during a night approach at Kuching Airport, resulting in landing gear collapse and significant airframe damage.

What happened

During a scheduled mail delivery flight originating from Kuala Lumpur, the crew began a nighttime approach toward Kuching Airport. The runway surface was notably wet following a period of intense rainfall. Upon making contact with the runway, the aircraft drifted toward the left side of the pavement and exited the prepared surface.

As the aircraft moved onto the unpaved terrain, the impact with the soft ground caused the collapse of both main landing gears. The force of the excursion resulted in the separation of the left engine from the airframe. The sequence concluded when the aircraft came to a stop approximately 1,500 metres beyond the runway threshold. Although the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, all four crew members were able to evacuate the wreckage without any injuries.

Findings

  • The runway conditions were compromised by heavy recent rainfall which left the surface wet.
  • The aircraft deviated from the centerline following touchdown, leading to the excursion onto soft ground.

Probable cause

The aircraft veered off the runway onto soft ground following touchdown on a wet surface, leading to gear collapse.
