What happened
On a geophysical survey mission departing from Saskatoon/Diefenbaker International Airport, a C-212-CC40 operated by Fugro Aviation Canada Ltd. experienced a series of mechanical failures. The aircraft, registered as C-FDKM, was flying under visual flight rules toward a location east of Saskatoon with a crew consisting of two pilots and one survey equipment operator.
At approximately 18:14, the aircraft's right engine suffered a loss of power. In response, the crew deactivated the engine and followed standard checklist procedures to prepare for an approach to Runway 27. However, while the aircraft was 3.5 nautical miles from the runway on its final approach, the left engine also lost power.
Unable to maintain flight on a single engine, the crew performed an emergency forced landing near Wanuskewin Road in Saskatoon. During the descent, the aircraft struck a concrete noise abatement wall on a roadway. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. The accident resulted in one fatality and two injuries, specifically one serious injury and one minor injury. No signal from the emergency locator transmitter was detected following the crash.
Findings
- The aircraft experienced a sequential loss of power in both engines during the approach phase.
