What happened
Following its departure from Hesperia, the aircraft encountered significant technical difficulties during the initial climb. In response to these mechanical issues, the pilot attempted an emergency landing on a nearby hillside. During this maneuver, the plane struck the terrain, resulting in a total loss of the airframe.
The incident resulted in two serious injuries and four minor injuries among the occupants. The flight crew and passengers involved in the crash sustained various levels of trauma during the impact.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified several issues related to the engine's performance and maintenance. The primary cause was determined to be an engine malfunction or failure stemming from insufficient inspection and maintenance protocols.
Several contributing factors were noted in the official report:
- The presence of foreign material interfering with standard operations
- Contamination within the fuel supply, though notably not caused by water
- Obstructions found within the fuel system, specifically affecting filters, strainers, and screens
- Debris causing a partial clog in the engine screen
- Evidence of overload failure
- Observations from witnesses indicating that the engine was not producing full power during the takeoff roll
- The decision by the pilot to continue the takeoff rather than aborting the maneuver once problems were detected
