What happened
On a flight departing from Island Lake, Manitoba, toward St. Theresa Point, a Cessna 207, registered as C-GHKB, experienced an accident shortly after takeoff. The flight was intended to be a visual flight rules (VFR) trip covering approximately 7 miles. At 14:55 CDT, the aircraft departed from runway 30 and initiated a left turn at an altitude of roughly 300 feet to align with runway 22 at the destination.
During this maneuver, the aircraft encountered sudden white-out conditions caused by heavy snow and blowing snow. The pilot, who did not hold an instrument flight rules (IFR) rating, observed an increasing rate of descent on the vertical speed indicator. In an attempt to correct this descent, the pilot pulled up on the nose, which resulted in the aircraft striking the snow-covered surface of the lake. There was no post-crash fire, and the pilot remained uninjured.
Following the impact, the pilot attempted to contact Flight Service Station (FSS) at 14:58 CDT. Although direct communication was not established, the FSS identified an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal during the transmission attempt. Local authorities, including the RCMP, were alerted to the incident. The pilot was eventually reached by a snowmobile at 15:37 CDT and subsequently evacuated via helicopter to the Island Lake nursing station.
