What happened
A scheduled Part 135 passenger flight departed for a remote coastal village but failed to arrive at its destination. After the aircraft failed to return as planned, an aerial search operation was launched. The following day, search teams located the wreckage along the intended flight path, approximately 49 miles from the departure airfield.
The investigation determined that the aircraft type had struck flat, snow-covered terrain. There were no reported anomalies regarding the aircraft's performance prior to the accident. No information regarding fatalities or injuries was provided in the initial report.
Findings
Testimony from another pilot, who departed roughly one minute after the subject flight on a similar route, provided context regarding the environmental conditions. While initial ceilings were reported between 2,500 and 4,500 feet, the subsequent pilot encountered a significant weather front characterized by fog and low cloud layers. This pilot described encountering a wall of weather with bases at ground level and tops at 1,500 feet, which necessitated a route change to avoid the area. Under standard weather conditions, the flight path would have passed directly over the site where the wreckage was recovered.
