What happened
During a flight traveling from Anacortes toward Eastsound Airport on Orcas Island, the aircraft encountered worsening meteorological conditions. While operating in an area characterized by low ceilings and heavy fog, the single-engine airplane descended into a level of altitude that was insufficient for the visibility present. The aircraft subsequently impacted trees, resulting in the total destruction of the plane. The pilot sustained one injury during the accident.
Findings
Investigations into the crash identified several environmental challenges, including fog and high obstructions in the flight path. The primary factor contributing to the accident was the pilot's decision to maintain visual flight rules (VFR) while flying into increasingly adverse weather. This resulted in a controlled collision with trees during the cruise phase of the flight.
