Aircraft excursion during landing at Longleat

No fatalities • Longleat House, United Kingdom • Landing (descent or approach)

An aircraft experienced a landing excursion on a private road at Longleat after encountering windshear, resulting in minor injuries to one passenger.

What happened

During an approach to a landing area consisting of a closed section of private road at Longleat, the pilot performed two circuits of the intended site. Prior to the final approach, the pilot noted that the width of the road might be insufficient for the aircraft, which featured a mainwheel track width of 3.93 meters. The road, measuring 5.4 meters in width, was flanked by wet grass on both sides.

While on short final approach, the aircraft encountered windshear at an altitude of 200 feet above ground level. The aircraft subsequently touched down on the grass, 1.6 meters to the left of the designated landing strip. During the rollout, the left propeller and the tail skid made contact with the ground. The aircraft then collided with a 'No Parking' sign. As the landing gear began to sink into the soft terrain approximately 48 meters later, the right propeller also struck the ground. The movement of the aircraft ceased after an additional 64 meters.

Findings

There was no fire following the incident. During the landing or subsequent rollout, a passenger seat back collapsed, causing a minor back injury to one passenger. The injured individual was transported to a local hospital but was discharged the same evening. The incident involved a total of one injury and no fatalities.

Probable cause

The aircraft encountered windshear during the final approach, leading to an off-runway touchdown on soft ground.
