What happened
During the takeoff sequence at Pottstown-Limerick Airfield, an aircraft experienced a critical mechanical issue immediately following liftoff. While the plane was in its initial climb, one of the engines ceased functioning properly. This loss of power resulted in the pilot losing control of the aircraft. The plane subsequently entered a stall and impacted the ground, resulting in a post-crash fire. There were five fatalities among the occupants of the aircraft.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified several contributing factors that led to the loss of control. The primary cause was an engine failure for reasons that remain undetermined. Additionally, the investigation noted that the pilot did not attempt to abort the takeoff once the issue arose. Other contributing elements included a failure to retract the landing gear and an inability to maintain the necessary airspeed during the climb phase.
