What happened
On May 20, 2019, a Cessna 402, registered as C6-AAL, was operating a flight from Lynden Pindling International Airport to Staniel Cay Airport in the Exuma district of the Bahamas. The aircraft was carrying nine people at the time of the incident.
Upon completing the landing phase at Staniel Cay Airport, the aircraft began its roll-out on the runway. During this process, the pilot attempted to utilize the braking system but discovered that the left side was not providing any braking action. Despite the pilot's efforts to maintain control by applying the remaining brakes and maintaining back pressure on the yoke, the aircraft suffered a loss of directional control. This caused the plane to veer to the left, resulting in a runway excursion.
The impact of the excursion caused substantial damage to the airframe. Notable damage included the left wing, the left main landing gear and its assembly, the nose cone, and the left propeller. There were no injuries reported among the nine occupants.
Findings
At the time of the accident, weather conditions were within visual meteorological limits and were not considered a contributing factor to the event. The primary issue identified during the landing roll was the failure of the left-side braking mechanism.
