What happened
During an unauthorized flight originating from Colombia, an aircraft crashed in a secluded region near Fort White. The flight was reportedly being used to transport cocaine. While attempting to land in a rural area, the plane struck trees and plummeted into an isolated zone.
The impact resulted in the total destruction of the aircraft. There were two fatalities among the occupants of the plane.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified several critical factors contributing to the crash. The primary cause was a collision with trees occurring during a low-altitude pass because the pilot misjudged the aircraft's height above the terrain.
Additional contributing elements included:
- The presence of cocaine paste within the cargo
- Evidence of physical impairment of the pilot
- Significant pilot fatigue
- Toxicology results from the pilot indicating the presence of cocaine and methaqualone in both blood and urine
