Fatal aircraft accident near Wels Airport

3 fatalities • Wels, Austria • Takeoff (climb)

A twin-engine aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Wels Airport during a positioning flight, resulting in the deaths of all three people on board.

What happened

A positioning flight departing from Wels Airport toward Linz-Hörsching and eventually Bratislava ended in a fatal crash. The twin engine aircraft took off from runway 27 under conditions of significantly reduced visibility, as fog had limited the range to approximately 100 metres and the runway visual range was recorded at 325 metres.

Shortly after departing the runway, the aircraft made contact with treetops located roughly 1,125 metres beyond the end of the runway. This impact caused the plane to lose altitude, leading to a crash approximately 300 metres further along the flight path. The subsequent impact resulted in a post-crash fire that completely destroyed the airframe. There were three fatalities among the occupants of the aircraft.

Findings

  • The accident occurred during the initial climb phase of flight.
  • Dense fog and extremely low visibility were present at the time of the accident.

Probable cause

The aircraft struck trees and crashed following takeoff during periods of heavy fog and low visibility.
