What happened
A twin-engine aircraft departed from Sondreströmfjord on a scheduled charter mission destined for Goose Bay. The flight was transporting a total of eight people, consisting of two pilots and six sailors. Approximately seventeen minutes into the flight, while the aircraft was maintaining a cruising altitude of FL220, it began an uncontrolled descent. During this period, the crew failed to transmit any emergency signals or distress calls.
As the aircraft descended to an altitude of 7,000 feet, the airframe underwent a complete disintegration, causing debris to be distributed across a large area. Search efforts located the wreckage approximately 148 kilometers southwest of Sondreströmfjord. There were eight fatalities among the occupants, with no survivors reported from the crash site.
Findings
The investigation into the incident noted that the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of structural integrity during its descent.
