What happened
A twin-engine aircraft departed from Papeete-Faaa Airport on a medical transport mission destined for Maupiti. The flight was being operated as an ambulance service, carrying a crew consisting of one pilot and two doctors.
During the initial climb phase at night, the pilot contacted air traffic control to report technical difficulties involving one of the engines. To ensure the safety of the passengers and crew, the pilot elected to abort the mission and return to the departure airport.
While performing the final approach, the aircraft type lost stability and went out of control. The aircraft subsequently impacted the ocean a short distance from the airport. There were three fatalities in the accident, with no survivors among the occupants.
Findings
At the time of the crash, visibility was limited by darkness, though meteorological conditions were reported as excellent. The flight was interrupted by engine malfunctions identified during the climb.
