What happened
During the night, an aircraft owned by Vancon Holdings LLC was taken from its parking spot at the Spanish Fork-Springville Airport. The individual operating the plane, a private pilot, flew the aircraft south toward Payson. During the flight, the pilot lowered the altitude of the plane and steered it directly into his personal residence. The impact caused the aircraft to disintegrating and ignited a fire that destroyed both the plane and the house. The pilot was the sole fatality in the incident. Although his wife and daughter were inside the home during the collision, they escaped without any injuries.
Findings
Investigations by local authorities determined that the crash was a deliberate act, noting that the pilot had been booked on domestic assault charges only hours before the event. Post-crash inspections of the aircraft confirmed that the flight controls were functioning normally and no mechanical failures contributed to the crash. Medical examinations of the pilot revealed he had a history of anxiety, depression, and anger management struggles. Additionally, toxicology reports identified the presence of medication used for treating panic attacks and obsessive-compulsive disorder, a substance the pilot had not disclosed to the Federal Aviation Administration.
