What happened
On November 13, 2025, at 19:47 local time, a Beechcraft C-90 GTI, registration HK5118, was operating an air ambulance flight from Popayán (SKPP) to Bogotá (SKBO). After landing on Runway 14L at El Dorado International Airport, the crew received instructions from the North Tower Air Traffic Controller (ATC) to vacate the runway via taxiway Alpha 8.
While taxiing, the crew overshot the entrance to taxiway Alpha 8 by approximately 100 meters. Upon realizing they had passed the exit, the crew performed a 180-degree left turn on the active runway to backtrack toward the taxiway. This maneuver was executed without prior consultation with or authorization from the North Tower controller.
During this period, the controller cleared an Airbus A320, registration HK5319, for takeoff. The Airbus A320 began its takeoff roll and only identified the presence of the Beechcraft on the runway while traveling at high speed. As the Beechcraft C-90 GTI finally exited the runway via taxiway Alpha 8, the departing Airbus A320 crossed the path of the smaller aircraft at an altitude of less than 100 feet during its climb.
The investigation
The GRIAA investigation focused on the sequence of movements on Runway 14L and the communications between the flight crew and the North Tower. The investigation examined the aircraft's path, including the overshoot of taxiway Alpha 8 and the subsequent unauthorized turn. The investigation also reviewed the timing of the takeoff clearance issued to the Airbus A320 and the proximity of the two aircraft during the crossing maneuver. Further analysis of aircraft documentation, flight data recorder (FDR) information, and ATC frequency recordings remains pending.
