What happened
On July 9, 2022, a Maule M-7-235 C, registration OK-AGA, was performing a flight from Holíč to the Strážnice non-public landing field to provide technical assistance for a glider. Upon arrival at the field, the pilot entered a left-hand pattern for runway 05.
During the final approach, the pilot utilized partial flaps and encountered a northwest crosswind of approximately 2–3 m/s. The pilot reported that the aircraft drifted before touchdown, prompting an attempt to force the plane down using the control column. The aircraft touched down approximately 100 meters past the runway threshold, resulting in a long landing roll.
In an attempt to shorten the rollout, the pilot applied intense braking and pulled the controls back. This sudden deceleration caused the aircraft's nose to dip, leading the propeller to strike the ground. The impact forced the engine to stop and caused the aircraft to flip onto its back. The pilot and passenger were able to exit the aircraft through a side window; the passenger was able to shut off the fuel valve and magnetos before exiting.
The investigation
The ÚZPLN investigation examined the flight data recorder, which confirmed the pilot's account of the sequence of events. The investigation established that the pilot was properly licensed and the aircraft was airworthy and maintained according to regulations. The investigation also confirmed that meteorological conditions and the runway surface were suitable for the flight and did not contribute to the accident.
Findings
- The pilot performed an inappropriate braking maneuver during the landing roll.
- The landing was executed with an incorrect estimation of the remaining runway distance.
- The intense braking at a speed of approximately 50 km/h created a pitching moment that the pilot could not compensate for, leading to propeller contact with the ground.
- The aircraft sustained extensive damage, including bent propeller blades, engine mount damage, and structural deformation of the wings and cockpit, resulting in the aircraft being a total loss.
