What happened
On 11 August 2018, a de Havilland DH-89A MKIV Dragon Rapide, registered N683DH, was participating in flight demonstrations following the conclusion of the Abbotsford International Airshow. The aircraft, operated by the Historic Flight Foundation, was performing a local flight to the southeast carrying the pilot and four passengers.
During the takeoff roll from Runway 25, the aircraft was subjected to intense, gusting crosswinds. After reaching an altitude of approximately 30 feet, the plane experienced a sudden descent, striking the runway surface. The impact caused the aircraft to come to a stop on its nose just beyond the right edge of the runway. While a fuel spill occurred at the site, no fire broke out during the incident.
Emergency response was immediate, with aircraft rescue firefighting units and command vehicles arriving within two minutes. Subsequent arrivals included various ground and air ambulance services to treat those on board. The aircraft sustained substantial damage during the excursion.
Findings
- The aircraft encountered strong, gusting crosswinds during the takeoff phase.
- The sudden loss of altitude led to the runway impact.
