What happened
During a flight from RAF Sculthorpe to RAF Burtonwood, a single-engine aircraft encountered marginal weather conditions while cruising. During the transit, the aircraft collided with a hill situated in the vicinity of Glossop. The impact resulted in the total destruction of the airframe. There were two fatalities recorded, involving both the pilot and a passenger.
Findings
Official investigations concluded that the accident was caused by an error by Air Traffic Control. Specifically, a Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) controller at RAF Burtonwood misidentified the aircraft, providing navigational guidance that directed the plane into the mountain.
