What happened
Upon landing at the Elim Airstrip, a twin engine airplane failed to decelerate sufficiently before the end of the runway. The aircraft continued past the available runway length, resulting in an excursion that led to a collision with both a snow removal machine and a snow bank.
Despite the impact, there were no injuries reported among the two occupants on board. However, the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss.
Findings
Investigations into the accident identified that the pilot attempted to land on terrain that was not suitable for the conditions. The following contributing factors were noted:
- The presence of ice and slush on the runway surface.
- The failure to execute a go-around after selecting an unsuitable landing site.
