What happened
A single-engine aircraft crashed into a field of sugar cane located in Belle Glade. The impact was severe enough that the aircraft sustained damage beyond repair. At the time of the incident, the pilot was believed to be the only person on board; however, following the crash, the pilot could not be located at the scene.
Investigations into the flight revealed that the aircraft was being used for the illegal transport of marijuana at the time of the accident.
Findings
Official reports indicate that the accident occurred during the landing roll phase. The primary cause of the crash was a ground loop resulting from the pilot's selection of unsuitable terrain for landing. Several contributing factors were identified in the investigation:
- Incorrectly judged approach speed and distance
- Presence of high vegetation in the landing area
- Roughness of the terrain surface
- The illegal nature of the cargo being transported
