What happened
While operating a flight from Santa Cruz toward Trinidad, the crew encountered significant mechanical issues involving the propulsion system. The incident began when the temperature in the left engine increased, accompanied by a propeller overspeed condition. In response to these developing complications, the crew feathered the left propeller and received authorization to execute an emergency return to Santa Cruz.
Shortly after initiating the return, the right engine experienced a similar rise in operating temperature. Recognizing that the aircraft could no longer maintain sufficient performance to reach the airfield, the pilot decreased altitude to manage the situation. The flight concluded with a belly landing in a pasture situated in the La Senda area. Although the aircraft sustained damage that rendered it a total loss, all four occupants were evacuated from the wreckage without injury.
Findings
- The primary factor leading to the emergency was the simultaneous overheating of both engines during the flight.
