What happened
A flight operated by Monroe County Mosquito Control departed at approximately 17:40 EDT to perform low-altitude spraying operations. Following the aircraft's failure to return as scheduled, a search operation was launched. During the search, the wreckage was located at roughly 02:45 near Water Key, close to Summerland Key, Florida.
The accident is estimated to have taken place around 20:30 EDT, several hours after sunset. While performing a procedure turn intended to begin a new spray run, the aircraft struck mangrove trees that were approximately 40 feet tall. The impact specifically involved the left wing of the plane. There were no reports of witnesses to the event.
Investigation of the site revealed no evidence of engine failure or mechanical malfunction prior to the collision. The weather conditions in the vicinity, including nearby Key West, featured scattered clouds at 1,500 feet and 10 miles of visibility.
Findings
The accident resulted in two fatalities, as both pilots were killed in the crash. Investigators identified that the primary factor was the pilot-in-command's failure to maintain sufficient altitude and clearance from the terrain and trees. Additionally, the presence of trees and the low-light conditions during dusk were noted as contributing factors to the impact.
