What happened
During an approach to Milan-Malpensa, the crew encountered heavy fog that significantly reduced visibility. While approximately eight kilometers from the runway threshold, the aircraft descended to an altitude below safe limits. This resulted in a ground impact that caused the landing gear to detach and the fuselage to break into three distinct sections.
Following the collision, the wreckage caught fire in a nearby field. Despite the intensity of the flames, all 48 occupants successfully evacuated the cabin. The incident resulted in three injuries among the passengers, though these were reported as minor. The aircraft was completely destroyed during the event.
Findings
Investigations determined that the primary factor in the accident was the decision by the crew to proceed with the ILS approach despite being below the required minimum descent altitude.
