The flight was performing its approach from the east when the impact occurred at an altitude of approximately 7,700 feet. The collision took place roughly 14 km north of Avezzano.

Search efforts located the wreckage situated 125 meters below the mountain's summit. The accident resulted in five fatalities, as all members of the crew perished in the crash.
