What happened
On 25 July 1998, at approximately 08:50 UTC, a Douglas DC-9-82 MD 82, registered OH-LMT, was positioned at Stand B27R at London Heathrow Airport. The aircraft was engaged in a public transport operation and was being serviced while parked. During this period, a water replenishment vehicle collided with the aircraft's left wingtip. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the wingtip structure. There were no passengers on board at the time of the incident, and the seven crew members escaped without injury.
The investigation
Following the event, the AAIB examined the circumstances surrounding the ground movement at the stand. The investigation focused on the interaction between the airport service vehicle and the stationary aircraft. The findings were based on the aircraft accident report submitted by the pilot.
