What happened
During the first scheduled service operated by Aerovias Rojas from Aguascalientes to Mexico City, an aircraft struck terrain while on approach to Mexico City-Benito Juarez Airport. The flight was traveling from the north when it impacted the summit of a hill situated in the vicinity of Villa del Carbón.
The wreckage of the aircraft was subsequently located approximately 55 km northwest of Mexico City. There were 18 fatalities among the occupants on board, with no survivors reported from the crash site.
Findings
Investigations into the accident indicated that while the crew was performing the approach to the destination airport, they did not maintain a sufficient altitude. The primary factor in the accident was the failure to recognize that the aircraft was flying too low relative to the surrounding terrain.
